Alvaro Siza (1933) studied at the School of Architecture of the University of Oporto.Between 1955 and 1958 he worked in the studio of Fernando Tavora.he embarked on his professional career with the Boa Nova Restaurant (Leca da Palmeira, 1963).In this initial phase, his works combined modern typology with the vernacular tradition.Nonetheless, he constantly returns to clear volumes, like the great white parallellepiped of Avelino Duarte House (Ovar, 1985), which brings together all his earlier experience of housing typologies, including his major intervention in this area Quinta da Malagueira (Evora, 1977).Since the eighties, he has been commissioned to carry out a wide variety of porjects, ranging from the Santiago de Compostela Museum of Contemporary Art (1993) to the School of Education in Setubal (1992).

This richly illustrated book examines the houses designed by Alvaro Siza, one of the masters of contemporary architecture. The 28 villas represent an important aspect of Siza's career, where his distinctive ideas on home design translate into a wider conversation on living today and modern architecture.
Each construction is narrated by Alvaro Siza through his short poetic writings, a technical description, and a series of sketches. Also included are accounts written by Siza's clients, which bear witness to the complex dialogue behind the design of each house. The volume also features two visual essays based on a selection of drawings by Siza and impeccable photographs of his work.
Alvaro Siza is one of today's greatest living architects and the father of the new architectural minimalism. This book will be a must for the bookshelf of architects and students.

Volume 68/69: Volume 95: Siza's recent works and future projects, such as the Aveiro University Library, the Portuguese pavilion for EXPO '98, and the extension to the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum are gathered in this new issue. The projects are preceded by an interview with the architect and an introduction by William J.R. Curtis entitled Notes on Invention' which looks back at Siza's extensive oeuvre stretching over four decades.

From start to finish, it took the Modernist Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza, winner of the 1992 Pritzker Prize and designer of The Serpentine Gallery's 2005 Summer Pavilion, 33 years to construct the Bouca Residents' Association Housing in the northern city of Porto--which he realized in association with architect Antonio Madureira. During those years, Siza completed numerous important commissions, including the architecture faculty building at the University of Porto in 1985 and the Fundacao Serralves museum of contemporary art in that same city in 1999. In 1988 he restored the Chiado district of Lisbon, Portugal, after a devastating fire; and his Portuguese Pavilion for Lisbon's EXPO 98 was internationally recognized. While Siza was busy with all of these buildings and plans, the first phase of the Bouca project was falling ever deeper into disrepair, hampered by municipal neglect. It has since been brought up to Siza's standards, and this publication appraises the project, now happily completed. Siza's sketches, many of which are published here for the first time, reveal the tenacity of his search for the right solution.
