Explains how and why a thunderstorm occurs and gives safety steps to follow when lightning is flashing.
-
ONE lightning bolt, in a flash, strikes a tree.
TWO pilots radio in what they see.
THREE rings, the dispatcher answers the call.
FOUR eager smokejumpers race down the hall.
What are smokejumpers?
They are trained wildland firefighters who parachute into remote areas to extinguish fires. They are men and women who are on the front lines fighting forest and wildfires in order to save the environment from fire destruction. They are strong, dedicated, and brave.
With action-packed pictures and a simple, informative text, volunteer firefighter and fine artist Chris L. Demarest shows us how smokejumpers perform their unusual and difficult job of keeping all of us safe.
-
A clear and concise text describes the incredible power of lightening and it's positive and negative effects on living things.

Thirteen-year-old Nathalie Vaughan struggles to save friends and neighbours on the night of Canada's Frank Slide disaster. At 4:00 am, April 29, 1903, Nathalie lies awake in the booming coal town of Frank, at the base of Turtle Mountain, listening for the whistle of a train--the Spokane Flyer, bringing her American cousin Helena for a visit. Instead, Nathalie hears rocks tumbling down the mountain onto the town and the railway track. She and her mother are safe, but what about others? As she helps search for survivors, desperate questions fill her mind. How many have died? Will the men inside the mine be safe? Will the train be stopped in time? That morning, the northeast face of Turtle Mountain dropped one hundred million tons of limestone on the town. Seventy-six people died, but twenty-three were rescued from under the rocks, seventeen escaped from the mine, and the Flyer was stopped in time. This is a beautifully written novel, with engaging characters and authentic historical detail. It's a story of discovery, as Nathalie - Nattie to her friends - finds her own strengths and skills and the courage to use them.

The story of Erin and Katrina begins as the powerful storm, Hurricane Katrina, approaches Erin's home far inland from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, away from the worst damage. A chapter book for young readers, this is a story of recovery, concern, and compassion. Erin and her family respond to the disaster as many people did by offering help and support to those in need. The story depicts Erin's concern for the animals in the neighborhood, and later moves her to compassion for people who had lived in the storm's path, as she catches a glimpse of the displacement of those who lost everything. The harsh reality of the disaster is balanced by a message of hope as people eagerly seek to help storm victims. Erin and Katrina is a reflection of the compassion that was born in the midst of the tragedy that some have called the Hurricane of the Century. The vibrant illustrations, by two artists who know hurricanes well, add much to this well-told story.
