There are a number of diseases, such as ascites, renal dysfunction, cirrhosis and hypertension where both the liver and the kidney are involved. In addition, both organs are very important in regulating extracellular fluid volume, and how they work together or don’t work together can affect circulation and the heart. There has been very little written in the literature on the interaction of the two organs. This book addresses that problem.
The first edition of Ascites and Renal Dysfunction in Liver Disease was published in January 1999 and received extremely positive reviews:
‘There is no doubt that this textbook is essential, even for confirmed practitioners’ Acta Gastro-enterologica Belgica
‘Current information regarding treatment and therapy for patients with cirrhosis and ascites is clearly and effectively presented by the top international experts within this field’ Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology
The second edition is entirely revised and updated and the contents place greater emphasis on therapy.

Acid-Base is an area which lies within no one specialty and yet is important in renal and pulmonary conditions, for intensive care, and within medicine in general. This book is concise, yet provides comprehensive coverage of acid-base balance in a clinical context. It explains the fundamental processes, their nature and their significance, with an emphasis on practical aspects. The book is divided into three parts, the first providing an introduction to the topic, explaining the underlying principles and concepts of acid-base balance. The second section considers simple disturbances of acid-base balance, and their diagnosis and treatment. The final part concerns mixed disturbances and discusses how acid-base data should be tackled. This section provides a simple and logical approach to the practical problems of the interpretation of acid-base data.

The first part of this book describes in a condensed manner the current state of diagnosis and treatment of disorders of electrolyte balance and provides the physician with both a rapid aid to orientation at the bedside as well as a comprehensive insight into the pathophysiological relationships involved. A separate section deals with electrolytes in the urine. In the subsequent chapters, preanalysis and analysis of electrolytes are discussed with special reference to determination by means of ion-selective electrodes as well as "enzymatic" methods and carrier-bound reagents ("dry chemistry") including quality assessment.

The "Blackwell's Basics in Medicine" series deals with fluids and electrolyte balance. Each title addresses one particular topic. The first deals with salt and water, with a further title on potassium. This book deals with acid base. The series goes on to cover organ pathphysiology with titles on renal failure and heart failure using the Socratic method. The series follows a standard structure comprising brief questions (progressing from the simple to the more complex) followed by short answers. Case presentations teach the fundamentals of fluid and electrolyte balance, and illustrate the various topics presented. The approach is based on solid pathophysiological knowledge applied to basic medical principles, enabling the reader to interpret clinical data based on sound pathophysiological concepts, and thus provide better patient care.

Blackwell's Basics of Medicine Series examines relevant topics in medicine using concepts that pertain to the basic sciences as a starting point. The doctrine on which this series has been formulated dictates that two critical elements should be present in order to acquire the skills required for optimal patient management: a thoughtful approach based on solid pathophysiological knowledge and the ability to apply common sense generously while acquiring basic medical principles. This series uses simple questions followed by short answers as well as case presentations to illustrate the various topics presented. Each book in this series examines a carefully selected topic that is germane to the daily practice of medicine. This book contains everything you need to know about fluid and electrolytes but were afraid (...or didn't know how) to answer

ARF induced by traumatic rhabdomyolysis and crush syndrome is a well-known complication occurring in the wake of natural or manmade disasters. As a matter of fact, it is the second most frequent cause of death, following the direct traumatic impact. Early recognition of the crush syndrome and rapid initiation of fluid replacement is essential as this can dramatically reduce the incidence of ARF. After the Marmara earthquake of 1999, the Turkish Society of Nephrology, in collaboration with the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the International Society of Nephrology, prepared special questionnaires to obtain patient data and follow-up information to analyze the extent of the nephrological problems. This book is based on the 639 cases consequently documented, constituting an unprecedented collection of first-hand experience on crush syndrome-related ARF following earthquakes.

A concise handbook on clinical and technical possibilities The application of hemodiafiltration has been restricted until recently, when a broader clinical application has been made possible due to evidence from large studies and clinical investigations. This book provides an updated review of the evolution, advances and recent results achieved by hemodiafiltration in the clinical arena. The first part is devoted to historical notes and an outline of the evolution of different forms of hemodiafiltration, made possible by technological developments in the fields of membranes, machines and fluids. The next section describes the theoretical rationale for hemodiafiltration, providing a detailed analysis of the involved mass separation processes, the hydraulic properties of the dialyzers, fluid mechanics and crossfiltration in hollow fiber hemodialyzers. An outline of different hemodiafiltration techniques, also reporting peculiar transport mechanisms and related technology, is given next, and a section on the clinical effects of hemodiafiltration concludes this book. Including different technologies, the publication offers a complete overview of the technical and clinical possibilities provided by hemodiafiltration in its widest concept, ranging from the molecular basis to the most practical application. It will be a valuable tool for the implementation of hemodiafiltration in daily practice aimed at beginners and experts, scientists and physicians, students and senior faculty members alike.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common dominantly inherited neurogenetic disorders. Affecting 1 in 4000 individuals worldwide. Symptoms include facial and body disfigurement, mental retardation and abnormalities of the cardiovascular, renal and endocrine systems.
This book is written for a broad readership ranging from students to professionals. It provides the reader with a basic overview of the disease before discussing the most recent research and therapeutic developments in detail. It is essential reading for medical geneticists, molecular biologists, dermatologists, oncologists, neurologists, genetic counsellors, general practitioners and research students.
The volume attempts to cover clinical aspects of the disease; gene structure, expression and mutation; structural and functional aspects of the encoded protein, neurofibromin; the role of the NF1gene as a tumour suppressor, the emerging genotype-phenotype relationship for NF1, animal models of the disease and future prospects for disease treatment and prevention. -
This description of a model system for cell differentiation and organogenesis is written by one of the foremost researchers in the area. The main emphasis is on the mammalian kidney, but the book also deals with the development of the transien excretory organs. It includes discussions of induction, proliferation, early cytodifferentiation and morphogenesis and organogenesis. This authoritative account will be valuable to developmental biologists and also to scientists working in paediatric nephrology. As it gives the background of normal development and of control systems, it will also be of use to nephrologists working on abnormalities in the urinary tract.

The study of portal hypertension, its diagnosis and management, has been hindered in the past by lack of international consensus. Differences in methodology, definitions and interpretation of results between clinical trials makes this the assessment of new data difficult in the context of previous work. The first International Consensus Workshop, Definitions, Methodology and Therapeutic Strategies, took place in Baveno, Italy, in 1990. It made some steps towards standardising terminology and producing guidelines for future studies. The past five years have brought a growth in our understanding of the pathophysiology of portal hypertension, as well as exciting developments in diagnostic and treatment strategies. This title records the proceedings of the Second International Consensus Workshop (27-28 April 1995, Baveno, Italy). At this meeting, an international cast of experts consolidated opinion on topics covered at Baveno I, explored a wide range of issues surrounding portal hypertension, and reached a consensus of opinion on many of these. The sessions were also interspersed by lectures from opinion leaders on different aspects of portal hypertension.
