This modern poetic interpretation of the well loved Dhammapada presents the path of wisdom and joy as universal truths for a contemporary audience. Poet and Zen priest Tai Sheridan transforms the original using contemporary and minimalistic images that cut to the chase of Buddha's wisdom. The Dhammapada is one of the oldest Buddhist texts on walking the path of enlightenment, love, integrity, and kindness. It contains four hundred twenty-three aphorisms attributed to Buddha.

The works of the Buddha can feel vast, and it is sometimes difficult for even longtime students to know where to look, especially since the Buddha never explicitly defined the framework behind his teachings. Designed to provide just such a framework, In the Buddha's Words is an anthology of the Buddha's works that has been specifically compiled by a celebrated scholar and translator. For easy reference, the book is arrayed in ten thematic sections ranging from "The Human Condition" to "Mastering the Mind" to "The Planes of Realization." Each section comes with introductions, notes, and essays to help beginners and experts alike draw greater meaning from the Buddha's words. The book also features a general introduction by the author that fully lays out how and why he has arranged the Buddha's teachings in this volume. This thoughtful compilation is a valuable resource for both teachers and those who want to read the Buddha on their own.

The Dhammapada is the most widely read Buddhist scripture in existence, enjoyed by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. This classic text of teaching verses from the earliest period of Buddhism in India conveys the philosophical and practical foundations of the Buddhist tradition. The text presents two distinct goals for leading a spiritual life: the first is attaining happiness in this life (or in future lives); the second goal is the achievement of spiritual liberation, freedom, absolute peace. Many of the key themes of the verses are presented in dichotomies or pairs, for example, grief and suffering versus joy; developing the mind instead of being negligent about one's mental attitude and conduct; virtuous action versus misconduct; and being truthful versus being deceitful. The purpose of these contrasts is, very simply, to describe the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what does not.
For centuries, this text has been studied in its original Pali, the canonical language of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. This fresh new translation from Insight Mediation teacher and Pail translator Gil Fronsdal is both highly readable and scholarly authoritative. With extensive explanatory notes, this edition combines a rigorous attention to detail in bringing forth the original text with the translator's personal knowledge of the Buddhist path. It is the first truly ac -

The Buddhacarita, Asvaghosa's second century sanskrit poem, is the oldest existing story of Buddha's life. The saga begins with prince Siddhartha's magical birth and ends with his enlightenment. The ancient myth presents Buddha's relentless inquiry into the nature of reality and artfully weaves together an archetypal hero's journey, Buddhist philosophy, phantasmagorical occurrences, and historical facts. In this modern sequel, poet and Zen priest Tai Sheridan has remained true to the story line and many original images, but has radically transformed the structure into seven line stanzas to imbue it with enchantment and lyricism. The rhyme scheme and alliteration hark back to olden times. The authoritative English translations of the original are scholarly linguistic interpretations that make for difficult reading. This poetic rendition of The Buddhacarita brings the joy and meaning of Buddha's search to the modern reader.

This work has an extensive introduction which discusses the development and variety of the avadana genre and introduces literary analysis as a distinctive and valid approach to the study of Buddhist texts, one which holds the potential for deepening our understanding not only of the avadanas, but also of the many condition texts, both mainstream and Mahayana, in which narative plays as essential role.

Uncovers the strange and unexplained parallels Jesus's sermons, Buddha's sayings, and the koans of Zen Buddhist masters
Through his teachings, Jesus not only created the Christian heritage, he also transcended traditional Western thought to reveal many of the universal truths of Buddhism. As a result, the sayings of Jesus and Buddha are often nearly identical. In Jesus and Buddha, these sayings, as well as equivalences between Jesus and later masters of Zen Buddhism, are presented in parallel fashion on facing pages.
"It is easy to see the fault of others but hard to see one's own", Buddha remarked. "Why do you see the splinter in someone else's eye", Jesus asked, "and never notice the log in your own?"
At the heart of these amazing parallels lie two mysteries How could Jesus, living 500 years after Buddha in a land 3,000 miles from India, teach the same ideals? Some historians believe that Buddhist principles were known throughout the Roman Empire. Certain fringe theorists claim that Jesus was trained in Buddhism and some even insist that he visited India!
Since there's little evidence to support these claims, most scholars dismiss them, leading to the larger mystery, if Jesus was not subject to Buddhist influences, why do so many of his sayings parallel these teachings? Is it possible that the wisdom of Jesus led him not only to lay the foundation for the West's predominant rel

"The Dhammapada" is a collection of aphorisms that illustrate the moral teachings of Buddha - the spiritual path to the supreme Truth. Probably compiled in the third century BCE, the verses are arranged according to theme, covering ideas such as self-possession, good and evil, watchfulness and endurance. Together they describe how an individual can attain the enlightenment of Nirvana, the supreme goal of Buddhism. The road to Nirvana, as illustrated in "The Dhammapada", is narrow and difficult to negotiate, but the reward of eternal life gives hope and determination to the traveller.
