Investigating the secret societies, spies, classified projects, cults, and pacts that controlled the destinies of nations and empires, this historical exposé reveals the conspiracies that have changed the course of history. From the dirty dealings of the Louisiana Purchase and the Iran-Contra affair to the Trojan Horse and the research race to the moon, this examination proves that much of world history can be traced directly to classified plots and shadowy figures. These true accounts of espionage and secret organizations show the details necessary to paint a complete picture of the past.

British conquest of India, leading to the subordination of the entire Indian economy, polity and culture to the interests of the metropolitan power, forged a nation out of a widely-felt sense of cultural oneness among the Indian people. The great Revolt of 1857 was followed by resistance to British rule almost throughout the nineteenth century. This is a moving, accessible, episodically structured and well-researched account of the freedom struggle with a grass-roots perspective.

This work provides an introduction to Basque and Catalan nationalism. The two movements have much in common, but have differed in the strategies adopted to further their cause. Basque nationalism, in the shape of the military wing of ETA, took the path of violence, spawning an efficient terrorist campaign, while Catalan nationalism is more accommodating and peaceful. Conversi examines and compares the history, motives and methods of these two movements, considering the influence of such aspects of nationalist mobilization as: the choice of language, race and descent; the consequences of large-scale immigration; and the causes and effects of social violence.

Through a succession of key stages since Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) became independent in 1948, its Tamil minority, historically concentrated in the north and east but with an important segment in Colombo, became alienated from the Sinhalese majority and, after peaceful opposition failed to secure its rights, resorted to an armed struggle.
The Tamil Tigers (LTTE) today appear to hold the key to their people's future. While they have suffered setbacks, including the loss of the Tamil capital, Jaffna, they remain a potent guerrilla force, able to strike with impunity at both military and civilian targets. The Tigers' grip on the Tamil population seems secure, as does their overseas support and funding from Tamil exiles in Britain, Canada, and Australia.
This book offers a concise history of the Sri Lankan Tamil nation, its culture, social make-up, and political evolution. In a final chapter, A. J. V. Chandrakanthan gives a first-hand account of life and attitudes inside the embattled Tamil areas today.

This book examines the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada, from its historical roots, the roles of governments such as Trudeau and Mulroney, issues of official bilingualism, multiculturalism, the 1995 Quebec Referendum and the impact Quebec separatism would have on the future of Canada.

Nigerian-born scholar Tunde Adeleke argues that 19th-century black American nationalism not only embodied the racist and paternalistic values of Euro-American culture but also played an active role in justifying Europe's intrusion into Africa.

Many people think that ethnocultural politics in Canada are spiraling out of control, with ever more groups making ever greater demands. This book offers a more balanced picture. We have learned important lessons about how to accommodate ethnocultural differences, from the integration of immigrants to the accommodation of Quebecois nationalism, and these lessons can help us tackle the major challenges still facing us.

Eamonn McCann's account of what it is like to grow up a Catholic in a Northern Irish ghetto--first published in 1974--quickly became a classic account of the feelings generated by British rule. The author was at the centre of events in Derry which first brought Northern Ireland to world attention. He witnessed the gradual transformation of the civil rights movement from a mild campaign for 'British Democracy' to an all-out military assault on the British state.

In 'The Kurdish Nationalist Movement In The 1990s leading scholars on the history and plight of the Kurds systematically lay out the case that the Kurdish Question looms as one of the largest threats to peace and stability in the Middle East for coming decades.Separate sections examine the development of the movement in the 1980s and explore its influence on Turkey's foreign, domestic, and human rights policies, in the end questioning the viability of the Turkish state as presently constituted.

These eleven essays focus on Basque nationalism and institutions in the European Union in an increasingly globalized world, the image of Basques in the international media, depictions of ETA in the Spanish press and cinema, the status of Navarre and the French Basque country within (or without) Basque nationalism, and the articulation of a Basque foreign policy through the Basque Government's diaspora policy.

Daniele Conversi's book is a comprehensive introduction to Basque and Catalan nationalism. The two movements have much in common but have differed in the strategies adopted to further their cause. Basque nationalism, in the shape of the military wing of ETA, took the path of violence, spawning an efficient terrorist campaign. Catalan nationalism, by contrast, is generally more accommodating and peaceful. Daniele Conversi examines and compares the history, motives and methods of these movements, considering the influence of such intertwined aspects of nationalist mobilisation as the choice of language, race and descent as core values; the consequences of large-scale immigration; and the causes and effects of political violence.

Exploring a politically and culturally charged issue, this volume argues that Canadians will lose their country if they continue to tacitly endorse the separatist myth that Canada is not good enough for Quebec. Explaining how the Quebec Liberals and the Parti Québécois have played good cop/bad cop over the past 30 years—extorting endless concessions from Canada in the process—the book urges readers to challenge the separatists on their "right" to unilaterally break up the country. It also urges the federal government to issue a reality check to all Quebecois citizens, outlining the real costs of separation. This critique of the Canadian political scene may be sobering, but the book's conclusion is optimistic: Canada will survive—and thrive—not because of its politicians, but in spite of them.

In this book, scholars and practitioners from both sides of the divide, Czech and Slovak, as well as experts from the United States and France, seek to explain why, after the collapse of the communist regime, Czechoslovakia split into two separate states. In trying to interpret the causes and processes of a modern state's peaceful disintegration, the authors, though addressing the subject from their own viewpoints, have used an analytical, non-evaluative approach.
The study also seeks to fulfil other objectives--both theoretical and practical. On the one hand, the Czechoslovak experience is used to explore the concepts and instruments of European integration as a whole, and the theory of contemporary nationalisms; on the other, it could well have some practical policy implications for those countries facing similar problems. -
An AltaMira Press Book While the momentous acheivement of Indian independence and the simultaneous partitioning of the subcontinent in 1947 have primarily been studied from political perspectives, this path-breaking volume explores neglected aspects of these tremendous upheavals. Freedom, Trauma, Communities concentrates on popular perceptions and subjective, psycholocial experiences that offer new perspectives on those critical events in Indian society. The first three contributors consider various aspects of the appalling massacres which accompanied Partition and Independence. The next three essays discuss the ensuing mass migrations; efforts to resettle the refugees in the Punjab, Bengal, and Sind; and lingering memories of homes abandoned. The subsequent essay considers the integration of the Princely States into the Indian Union. Final contributions document the many continuities which, paradoxically, accompanied such great upheaval.

This book examines the role of ethnic `kin states' in ethnosecessionist conflicts in South Asia using comparative case studies, both historical and contemporary. The author looks at how they respond to co-nationals across international boundaries and challenges the conventional wisdom that kin states act primarily as allies or friends. He provides a theoretical framework for understanding their role and then tests it against five major case studies to look at the differences in motives, responses, policy differences and consequences.
