Are Albanians Westerners or Easterners? What side will Albanians take in the clash of civilizations? Is the Albanian culture acceptable to Europe? Such questions are frequently asked in post-communist Albania by intellectuals who perceive the transition as an escape from the East and rush towards the West. In this book the "escape" of Albanians from the East is conceptualized beyond the issues of transition and integration to the European Union. It is argued that this phenomenon is linked to the politics of identity during the modern history of Albania, from the National Awakening to the present day. Through analysing the texts of Albanian intellectuals, such as Naim Frasheri, Krist Maloki, Branko Merxhani, Mitrush Kuteli, Ismail Kadare, Aurel Plasari, Piro Misha, etc., the author argues that the modern Albanian identities are constructed on binary oppositions Europe-Asia, civilization-barbarism, socialism-reactionism, West-East, Christianity-Islam. This work reopens the debate whether the focus on such dichotomies in Albanian contemporary politics and culture promotes the democratization process in Albania and its recent inclusion in the processes of globalization, or intellectual efforts should be made to move beyond them.

"Beaten But Not Broken" is an account of life of a black family from the eyes of the author, Calvin Coker and deals with the racial inequality and bigotry that most blacks faced in the south during those years of the 60s and 70s. It introduces a level of poverty that a large number of black Americans experienced and many today can relate to. Many white Americans may ask today, when will it ever be over, but for many blacks, the answer to that question is never, there will always be a struggle for us (us being all Americans). Beaten but Not Broken - YAHWEH Jireh (The Lord provides), is a story that is full of life's ups and downs. From reading it, you will see that racism is not just an attitude shared from whites to blacks and that life is full of other types of circumstances that can bring you down. However, there is one and only one God who reaches down to the lowest valley and will rescue people, no matter who you are. It is a story of a human spirit being beaten on several occasions, but something inside placed from above, saying "hold on just a little while longer, your change is coming". This is the testimony of the author, beaten or whipped at times, but finding the promised victory in Christ always in time.

FROM THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION: With the collapse of the Berlin Wall, went the conflict that had oriented our thinking and action about politics for more than half a century. Europe, from West to East, suddenly found itself in a much-enlarged democratic space. Membership in the Council of Europe had increased to forty-five in 2004. The European Union expanded to twenty-five countries, with others preparing to join. Never before has there been such a large number of politically active, trans-national networks motivated by the "interests and passions" of citizens to promote and protect the quality of their democracy. If it is to retain its legitimacy, contemporary democracy must react, adapt and actively attempt to mould its environment if it is to have a significant effect upon improving the socio-political, cultural and economic well-being of its citizens. Today's governments throughout Europe are being assailed by a myriad of external forces. These have changed the context in which liberal political democracy operates. Governments and elected representatives have found it increasingly difficult to cope with these changes through their traditional institutions and arrangements. Just to list the major ones currently affecting "real existing" democracy in Europe, these are: globalisation, European integration, inter-cultural migration, demographic trends, economic performance, technological change, state capacity, individuation, mediatisation and a prevailing sense of insecurity.
