As a young boy in Ukraine, Roman Mac witnessed the upheaval of life in his native Molodych by Nazi and Communist adversaries determined to control it. By the age of twelve he joined the Ukrainian underground, serving as a scout, special courier, and often as a terrain operational leader during armed conflict. Even at that tender age he understood the stakes: to win the freedom of Ukraine or die trying. Four years later, after the forced resettlement of his villagers to Poland's Recovered Territories and still wanted by the Communists for his underground activities, Mac and several comrades walked through Poland and Czechoslovakia to West Germany's American Zone, where they laid down their arms. He immigrated to the United States in 1950, where he served in the US Army, graduated from college, and established a business manufacturing accessories for musical instruments. Mac lives with his wife in Bethlehem, PA.

Oleh Lysheha is considered the "poets' poet" of contemporary Ukraine. A dissident and iconoclast, he was forbidden to publish in the Soviet Union from 1972 to 1988. Since then, his reputation has steadily grown to legendary proportions. His work is informed by transcendentalism and Zen-like introspection, with meditations on the essence of the human experience and man's place in nature. James Brasfield studied poetry and translation with Joseph Brodsky, Derek Walcott, Daniel Halpern, and other luminaries. He served as an editorial assistant for poetry at The Paris Review, and now teaches English at Pennsylvania State University.
The Collected Poems here include facing-page English and Ukrainian versions of selected poems and a play, "Friend Li Po. Brother Tu Fu." It represents a rare example of translations that are as beautiful as the original poetry and poems that anyone interested in the written word will appreciate.

Ukrainian for Speakers of English is intended for individuals who have no knowledge of Ukrainian. It is suitable for university students, senior high school students, and adult learners in a home study situation. All of the material is presented from the point of view of a student who knows how to speak English, but who may not know the formal rules of English grammar. Before a new point in Ukrainian grammar is introduced, students are first reminded about what they know, either formally or informally, about a similar structure in English. The grammar explanations in this text are brief and simple; they convey only as much information as a student can be expected to assimilate in the early stages of learning a second language. Numerous examples, summaries, and charts are included to assist the learner. After a grammar point has been introduced and explained, the student is able to apply what has been learned about that particular structure by actively engaging in carefully coordinated oral exercises and mini-conversations that are to be practiced in class, in the language lab, and at home. The written exercises provide both the student and the instructor with a means of checking how thoroughly the structures have been learned. The systematic organization of the material ensures that students acquire the ability to use the language competently. Successful

This study, first published in Moscow is Shcherbak's account of the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986 based on interviews with many of the participants. Shcherbak considers the Chernobyl accident to be the most important event in the USSR since World War II. Consequently he felt himself impelled to travel to the designated danger zone around the reactor, to live there and to interview firemen, first aid workers, party and government officials and local media representatives. The result is a variety of eyewitness accounts that are considered to be unprecedented in their detail and in their frankness.
