The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace," which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, and in our interactions with society.
This is an expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a new introduction by John Stevens, recently translated doka, didactic "poems of the Way," and Ueshiba's own calligraphy. -
Aikido, the "gentleman's fighting art," neutralizes aggression and renders attackers harmless without injuring them. By controlling body position and understanding its simple physical premises, anyone-regardless of size, strength or weight-can fend off attacks using this sophisticated martial art. This classic text reveals the secrets which enable the stunning displays of physical control practiced in Aikido. Further, it delves into the ethical intention requisite for successful aikido, and enables its readers to harmonize their vital powers-both mental and physical-into the disciplined practice of this elegant martial art.

An insightful and inspiring book for the spiritual seeker, The Way of Aikido offers a new way of facing life's challenges using the powerful philosophy of Aikido. In the bestselling tradition of classics such as Zen and the Art of Archery and Peace Is Every Step, The Way of Aikido translates the teachings of an intricate Eastern philosophy into life lessons for American readers. For three decades, George Leonard has taught more than 50,000 people a unique form of Aikido, in which life's unanticipated blows become gifts, attacks lead to reconciliation, discord is transformed into harmony, and pain is reborn as vital energy. The Way of Aikido is the culmination of these teachings, designed not only for students of the martial arts, but also for all who seek to improve themselves.
* Aikido is the fastest-growing martial arts discipline in America
* Leonard is the author of twelve previous books and a 4th degree black belt in Aikido -
Ki, the "Force" behind the Japanese martial art of Aikido, has much in common with Chinese ch'i, the Sanscrit prana, and the Greek pneuma, but all remain strange concepts to many Westerners.
Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, founded by Koichi Tohei in 1974, emphasizes coordination of mind and body to produce inner strength and stability. It differs from other styles of Aikido in the formalized study of ki, relaxation and body mechanics.
Ki testing provides an unusual opportunity to actually test, measure, and evaluate many traditional concepts of mind and body which must otherwise be dismissed as "flaky New Age weirdness" or accepted on faith, despite secret doubts and fears.
Here are step-by-step instructions and illustrations of ki exercises and test techniques. This new edition expands the original First Edition chapters on breathing and meditation with additional information on modern biofeedback and the science of breath.

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of Aikido—whose name means "abundant peace"—was "undoubtedly the greatest martial artist who ever lived," according to his biographer, John Stevens. "Even if we accept every exploit of all the legendary warriors, East and West, as being literally true, none of those accomplishments can be compared to Morihei's documented ability to disarm any attacker, throw a dozen men simultaneously, and down and pin opponents without touching them, recorded scores of times in photographs, on film, and by personal testimony." How did the diminutive master—barely five feet tall—attain this uncanny power? In Abundant Peace, John Stevens tells the real story behind Morihei's achievement, illuminating the man and his message in a way that will delight and stimulate the reader. Focusing on the how and why of Morihei's career, Stevens describes the people, events, and ideas that influenced his lifelong spiritual quest, which culminated in the unique teachings of Aikido. Illustrated with photographs of Morihei in action and filled with revealing anecdotes about his life and times, the book also offers a valuable discussion of the Founder's conception of Aikido as a path of harmony and love, unifying mind and body, self and others, man and the universe.

Drawing on the poetic wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, American sensei Wendy Palmer translates the powerful teachings of aikido for use in everyday life—all without practicing the vigorous exercises of the martial art, itself. With poignant reflections on her own life, including her Conscious Embodiment work and teaching inmates in a woman's federal prison, she describes how we can lose our sense of freedom, vitality, and integrity when under the duress of life's "attacks." She explores a process that responds to the question How? How do we transform our negativity into budo, or love, and how do we move from reactivity to freedom? The Practice of Freedom is invaluable not only for students of aikido and other movement and martial arts, but also for those who seek to live with confidence and self-reliance, to establish clear and compassionate boundaries, and to deepen their capacities for loving and honest relationships.

Useful to the beginner and experienced practitioner alike, the book details the traditional methods and techniques of Shirata Rinjiro, of whom John Stevens is a principal student. Noted for the precise execution of a wide range of techniques and an emphasis on Aikido as a spiritual path, Shirata Sensei's teachings exemplify the way of the warrior: superior technical prowess combined with profound spiritual insight.
In addition to photographs and descriptions of all the important Aikido techniques, Stevens recounts interesting and lively anecdotes about the history of Aikido and its founder, Ueshiba Morihei, who developed it from a martial art into a spiritual discipline. A biography of Shirata Sensei, complete with his reflections on sixty years of Aikido practice, is also included. -

Aikido is a martial art unlike any other. It contains no attacks, only defense, and this defense should be so gentle that even the attacker is delighted by it. There is no competition, since each participant should be a winner. It's an art that takes a lifetime to learn.
This book presents the principles and basic concepts of aikido, which is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy and the refined ideals of the samurai. It is not a technical manual, but an exploration of the thoughts and theories at work in aikido practice.
The book elaborates on the ethics involved in practicing this martial art, the philosophy on which it's founded, and the attitude needed to progress in aikido. It also goes through the many significant Japanese terms used, explaining their meaning in training as well as in the martial arts context and theory.
Among the terms explored are the three words that make up the name of the art: ai, joining, ki, the universal life energy, and do, the way. Tanden, the center, is also explained thoroughly, as is kiai, the concentration of energy, takemusu, the ideal of improvised martial arts, and many other concepts used in aikido as well as the other Japanese martial arts.
One chapter is dedicated to kototama, the cosmology of sounds that the founder of aikido, Morihei -
