North Korea is today one of the last bastions of hard-line Communism. Its leaders have kept a tight grasp on their one-party regime, quashing any nascent opposition movements and sending all suspected dissidents to its brutal concentration camps for "re-education." Kang Chol-hwan is the first survivor of one of these camps to escape and tell his story to the world, documenting the extreme conditions in these gulags and providing a personal insight into life in North Korea. Part horror story, part historical document, part memoir, part political tract, this record of one man's suffering gives eyewitness proof to an ongoing sorrowful chapter of modern history. New edition with a new preface by the author.

Have you ever visited Chiang Mai in the far north of Thailand? Located in “The Golden Triangle,” where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet? Chiang Mai is world’s apart from big sister, Bangkok. This area in the Himalayan foothills is known for its mountainous beauty, jungle trekking (try elephant riding), ruins, hill tribes, and “Wats,” (the Thai name for temples). Chiang Mai, a former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, is the place to enjoy the many options.
Spend hours walking through Chiang Mai's historical center inside the walled city; this less than one square mile is filled with 30 Wats - all unique, laden with gold - until you are Wat’d out! Spend more hours in Chiang Mai’s famous Night Market, bargaining and looking for something “different.” Head down a street with foot massage chairs lined up on sidewalks, filled with blissful patrons. Let little Garra Rufa fish nibble dead skin off feet. Eat wonderful food. ATV, motorbike, zip line. With so much to do, your time in Chiang Mai will fly by!

First published in 1931. None of the manuscripts which have come down to us represents the original form of Marco Polo's narrative, but it is clear that certain texts are closer to the lost original than others. Entrusted with the task of preparing a new Italian edition of Marco Polo, Benedetto discovered many unknown manuscripts. He carefully edited the most famous of the manuscripts (the Geographic text) and collated it with the other best known ones. * An invaluable index has been added to Aldo Ricci's of Benedetto's text, which includes all the identifications made in the Geographic text and also later editions by Marsden (1818), Pauthier (1865) and Yule (1871). * The difficulty of following Polo on his many journeys has also been simplified by the process of distinguishing between those places on his main route to China and his return journey by sea to Persia and those places which he visited during his stay in China and those he never visited at all.

Brig Olga, At Sea, 200 Miles From Kamtchatka. August 1jtA, 1869. Our voyage is at last drawing to a close, and after seven long weeks of cold, rainy, rough weather our eyes are soon to be gladdened again by the sight of land, and never was it more welcome to weary mariner than it will be to us. Even as I write, the sound of scraping and scrubbing is heard on deck, and proclaims our nearness to land. They are dressing the vessel to go once more into society. We were only 255 miles from the Kamtchatkan seaport of Petropavlovski last night, and if this favorable breeze holds we expect to reach there to-morrow noon. It has fallen almost to a dead calm, however, this morning, so that we may be delayed until Saturday. At Sea, Off The Coast Of Kamtchatka. Friday, August 1SiA, 1865. We have a fine breeze this morning; and the brig, under every stitch of canvas that will draw, is staggering through the seas enveloped in a dense fog, through which even her top-gallant sails show mistily. Should the wind continue and the fog be dissipated we may hope to see land to night. II A.M. I have just come down from the top-gallant yard, where for the last three hours I have been clinging un

Have you ever woken up in the sultry heat of the morning, your hair and beard teeming with maggots, and then had potatoes picked out of your ears?
Have you ever felt the cold barrel of a semi automatic gun against your forehead?
When Danny Bent cycled 15,000 kilometres from the UK to India to raise money for ActionAid, it was a decision that took twenty years and one minute. For twenty years he had wanted to do something to raise money for charity. The one minute was when as their teacher he was put on the spot by his pupils and declared that the means was by bike, and he was going to India.
What he had signed up for was slogging along roads with trucks bearing down on him, unable to see and choking in the smog; shooting down treacherous descents with 100 foot drops, shaking with cold and too numb to brake; muscle burn and saddle sores; delirium and food poisoning; thirst and malnutrition; foul and insanitary conditions; life-threatening crises; obstructive border guards, crazed dogs and inquisitive passers-by.
'You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!' is a real and compelling blow-by-blow account of Danny's trip across Europe, the former Soviet Republics, Russia, China, Pakistan and India.
And what people he met! They are the true delight of this book, mostly charming, sometimes reckless, occasionally threatening, always unpredictable, -
National Public Radio's Beijing correspondent Rob Gifford recounts his travels along Route 312, the Chinese Mother Road, the longest route in the world's most populous nation. Based on his successful NPR radio series, China Road draws on Gifford's twenty years of observing first-hand this rapidly transforming country, as he travels east to west, from Shanghai to China's border with Kazakhstan. As he takes the reader on this journey, he will also take us through China's past and present while he tries to make sense of this complex nation's potential future.

This book is about my visit to Lahore. I wanted to write something different to the average travel book. My intention is to make it a narrative of my travels around the city, just as if I am talking to you in person. Not a dry text book. I know text books have their uses but they are impersonal and generally only show the monuments and museums. I have several thousand photographs and it was very hard making the decision which ones to use.
I want you to see Pakistan as just like anywhere else, where you would go to a café or restaurant, buy ice cream as you walk in the park or go on the rides in the funfair. The people only want to live their lives and enjoy themselves in their leisure time like anyone in any country of the world. There is a lot of bad press about Pakistan and we are always being warned to stay away. But the Pakistanis themselves don’t want us to stay away. They welcome us. Wherever you go, people want to speak to you or have their photograph taken with you.
I never felt so at home anywhere else on holiday as I did when I was in Pakistan. I hope you like my book and it inspires you to make a visit there yourself. You will be happy you did.
This is the first in a series of books I am writing about Pakistan.
