Inspired by a poem of Richard Dehmel, the 1899 work Verklärte Nacht is a tone poem for string sextet composed in the late-Romantic tradition. Pierrot Lunaire, composed in 1912, is a musical setting for speaker and chamber ensemble of 21 poems by Albert Giraud, incorporating Schoenberg's revolutionary theory of atonality and singing-speech delivery called "Sprechstimme."

The Gedanke manuscripts, from which The Musical Idea is compiled, are legendary writings of Arnold Schoenberg. Central to his concern was his concept of the "musical idea," which represents the wholeness of the musical work and embraces Schoenberg's notions of motive, gestalt, phrase, theme, rhythm, harmony, and form. Ultimately, the musical idea is the vision of the composer by which a musical work achieves unity in relation to the means by which the work is comprehended in its unity by the listener.

The three composers of the Second Viennese School are credited with one of the most dramatic breaks in music theory practice. While the use of dissonance became increasingly acceptable throughout music history, the second viennese school pushed dissonance beyond its limits, rejecting tonality entirely and, instead, developing a system of atonal composition, most notably through twelve-tone music. This book examines the lives and works of each composer, with attention to works from each period of their careers, illustrating their progress towards atonality.

Pierrot lunaire (1912) is one of the most important music theater works ever written. This is the first guide in English to a work that continues to be performed, broadcast, and recorded worldwide. The book describes the artistic environment around the turn of the century from which Pierrot emerged, and discusses Schoenberg's working methods and intentions in composition. In a clear and imaginative description of the work itself, the author takes each of the twenty-one melodramas in turn, considering both the music and the narrative.
