Celiac Disease (CD) is one of the most common and under-diagnosed, hereditary autoimmune condition in the U.S. today. Recent studies reveal that 1 in every 100 people suffer from CD. And 97 percent of them are undiagnosed. The average time to diagnosis is currently 9 years. In the case of CD (also known as gluten intolerance), the body damages or destroys the very mechanism that enables us to digest food. The primary target of injury is the small intestine. Triggered by gluten, the main protein found in wheat, rye and barley, the disease damages the small intestine so that it is unable to properly absorb nutrients.Dr. Peter Green and writer Rory Jones help readers to identify the symptoms, understand their diagnosis and cope with the challenges of living with CD. Incredibly comprehensive, yet accessible and user friendly, this book covers the disease from a medical, dietary and psychological standpoint. It explores all aspects of CD from the often "silent" symptoms and proper diagnostic procedures to the many related conditions and specific diet. The book also includes appendices on related articles and books of interest, medical contact information and a list national CD support groups.

Ah, the innocence of medical school. This is a story from my third year of clinical clerkship, when I started rotating through the hospital wards, starting with internal medicine. I was matched to the gastrointestinal team, so I can recite the bacterial causes of bloody diarrhea to this day.
One patient taught me about ulcerative colitis...and a few other things.
You can also find this essay in my book, The Most Unfeeling Doctor in the World and Other True Tales from the Emergency Room. -
This classic text is much beloved by medical students and physicians-in-training throughout the English-speaking world, as its many editions indicate. It is chock full of the pearls of clinical wisdom that students and practitioners treasure, and many of these lessons apply to medicine in general. The book was well characterized by a reviewer of an earlier edition for The New England Journal of Medicine: 'If only one book about surgery could be made available to physicians from all specialties, it should probably be Silen's recent revision of Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen. Since the book first appeared, it has remained the classic treatise on the initial approach to abdominal pain.' Because acute, severe abdominal pain is still a common problem whose misdiagnosis can result in quick death, each generation of beginning physicians is faced with the urgency of learning to make a diagnosis in this high-anxiety situation, and they appreciate the wise, humane, precisely detailed guidance offered by Cope and Silen. For the 22nd Edition, Dr. Silen has again updated the text in a respectful but significant way. He has added a chapter on the increasing disorder of diverticulitis, reexamines the use of analgesics, emphasizes the costs of over-testing, and updates all recommendations regarding trauma, radiologic studies, and therapeutic recommendations.

Dietary strategies and delicious recipes that help manage inflammatory bowel disease.
Good nutrition is a top priority for people living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and also for their families and friends. There is often a fear of trying new foods, as well as other concerns. Is a current diet appropriate? Can the usual foods purchased at the grocery store still be part of the daily diet?
Crohn's and Colitis Diet Guide addresses these concerns and more. The authors explain how nutrition plays a central role in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and discuss the importance of maintaining general health during times of disease activity and periods of remission. They also show how a person's nutritional status affects immunity, wound-healing and other physiological processes. Reliable, well-researched dietary advice combined with 150 outstanding recipes provides a crucial resource for those managing IBD.
Although good nutrition does not cure IBD, and although -- with certain exceptions -- nutritional therapy does not always control disease flares, good nutrition is important for health maintenance, symptom management and well-being.
