This third and final volume of Strategic Activities on fractal geometry and chaos theory focuses upon the images that for many people have provided a compelling lure into an investigation of the intricate properties embedded within them. By themselves the figures posses fascinating features, but the mechanisms by which they are formed also highlight significant approaches to modeling natural processes and phenomena. The general pattern and specific steps used to construct a fractal image illustrated throughout this volume, comprise an iterated function system. The objective of this volume is to investigate the processes and often surprising results of applying such systems. These strategic activities have been developed from a sound instructional base, stressing the connections to the contemporary curriculum as recommended in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. Where appropriate, the activities take advantage of the technological power of the graphics calculator. The contents of this volume joined with the details contained in the prior two books. Together they provide a comprehensive survey of fractal geometry and chaos theory. The dynamic nature of the research and the experimental characteristics of related applications provides an engaging paradigm for classroom activity.

Fractal Cosmos Wall Calendar: Fractals are the visual depictions of mathematical equations, the same math equations, in fact, that describe natural phenomena like coastlines, plant shapes and weather patterns. A computer program assigns a color to each point in the image based on the answers to a chosen equation, which then results in abstract fractal shapes. Dozens of variables are manipulated in order to create these fascinating images. Equations representing the image accompany each picture. The Fractal Cosmos wall calendar is created with cutting edge computer programs and features the organic designs of Alice Kelley, who says, Fractals are an intuitive glimpse into the infinite order that comprises the natural world, as well as being proof that math is beautiful.”

The latest developments in chaos theory - from an industry expert
Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets was the first book to introduce and popularize chaos as it applies to finance. It has since become the classic source on the topic. This new edition is completely updated to include the latest ripples in chaos theory with new chapters that tie in today's hot innovations, such as fuzzy logic, neural nets, and artificial intelligence.
Critical praise for Peters and the first edition of Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets
"The bible of market chaologists." - BusinessWeek
"Ed Peters has written a first-class summary suitable for any investment professional or skilled investor." - Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities
"It ranks among the most provocative financial books of the past few years. Reading this book will provide a generous payback for the time and mental energy expended." - Financial Analysts Journal
This second edition of Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets brings the topic completely up to date with timely examples from today's markets and descriptions of the latest wave of technology, including genetic algorithms, wavelets, and complexity theory.
Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets was the very first book to explore and popularize chaos theory as it applies to finance. It has since become the industry standard, and is regarded as the definitive source to which analysts, investors, and traders turn for a comprehensive overview of chaos theory. Now, this invaluable reference - touted by BusinessWeek as "the bible of market chaologists" - has been updated and revised to bring you the latest developments in the field.
Mainstream capital market theory is based on efficient market assumptions, even though the markets themselves exhibit characteristics that are symptomatic of nonlinear dynamic systems. As it explores - and validates - this nonlinear nature, Chaos and Order repudiates the "random walk" theory and econometrics. It shifts the focus away from the concept of efficient markets toward a more general view of the forces underlying the capital market system.
Presenting new analytical techniques, as well as reexamining methods that have been in use for the past forty years, Chaos and Order offers a thorough examination of chaos theory and fractals as applied to investments and economics. This new edition includes timely examples from today's markets and descriptions of cutting-edge technologies-genetic algorithms, wavelets, complexity theory-and hot innovations, such as fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence.
Beyond the history of current capital market theory, Chaos and Order covers the crucial characteristics of fractals, the analysis of fractal time series through rescaled range analysis (R/S), the specifics of fractal statistics, and the definition and analysis of chaotic systems. It offers an in-depth exploration of:
* Random walks and efficient markets - the development of the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) and modern portfolio theory
* The linear paradigm - why it has failed
* Nonlinear dynamic systems - phase space, the Henon Map, Lyapunov exponents
* Applying chaos and nonlinear methods - neural networks, genetic algorithms
* Dynamical analysis of time series - reconstructing a phase space, the fractal dimension
Tonis Vaga's Coherent Market Hypothesis - the theory of social imitation, control parameters, Vaga's implementations
Plus, Chaos and Order now contains a Windows-compatible disk including data sets for running analyses described in the appendices.
Written by a leading expert in the field, Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets has all the information you need for a complete, up-to-date look at chaos theory. This latest edition will undoubtedly prove to be as invaluable as the first. -

Felix Klein, a great geometer of the nineteenth century, rediscovered an idea from Hindu mythology in mathematics: the heaven of Indra in which the whole Universe was mirrored in each pearl in a net of pearls. Practically impossible to represent by hand, this idea barely existed outside the imagination, until the 1980s when the authors embarked on the first computer investigation of Klein's vision. In this extraordinary book they explore the path from some basic mathematical ideas to the simple algorithms that create delicate fractal filigrees, most appearing in print for the first time. Step-by-step instructions for writing computer programs allow beginners to generate the images.

Everything You'll Need to Create Thousands of Fractals! Fractals are the name given to certain types of iterated equations that produce very strange results and are capable of creating unusual and beautiful patterns. Creating Fractals describes the characteristics and mathematical background of fractals and shows the reader how the accompanying fractal-generating program is used to produce thousands of different kinds of fractals, to enlarge them, to color them, and to save them-- without any knowledge of computers or programming. The program works with any computer using Windows. In addition to producing artistic effects, the reader can gain an understanding of how each type of fractal is created and how it might be used to treat natural phenomena, e.g., the turbulence of liquids, the behavior of the stock market, and the compression of graphic images. Mathematical terminology is explained in elementary terms.

This study of chaos, fractals and complex dynamics is intended for anyone familiar with computers. While keeping the mathematics to a simple level with few formulas, the reader is introduced to an area of current scientific research that was scarcely possible until the availability of computers. The book is divided into two main parts; the first provides the most interesting problems, each with a solution in a computer program format. Numerous exercises enable the reader to conduct his or her own experimental work. The second part provides sample programs for specific machine and operating systems; details refer to IBM-PC with MS-DOS and Turbo-Pascal, UNIX 42BSD with Berkeley Pascal and C. Other implementations of the graphics routines are given for the Apple Macintosh, Apple IIE and IIGS and Atari ST.
