Many courses for AS/400 programmers stop short of teaching you subfile programming. Subfiles are the AS/400 tool that supports displaying lists of data on the screen, and in today's increasingly screen-based world, you must understand and be able to use them. In fact, every list that you have seen the AS/400 display has been created using the same programming techniques that you will learn in these chapters. This text introduces you to subfiles and leads you through the process of creating and debugging subfile programs. As new subfile concepts are presented, you will develop and expand the same programs to meet expanded specifications. This approach mirrors the real world in which new specifications continually add to the complexity of interactive programs. You will program interactive displays that help users find the data they need and update records as required. You will learn several techniques for designing screens that help make user displays intuitive and easy to use. In a later chapter, you'll learn to use two tools — journaling and commitment control — that will protect your database's integrity when programs let records be changed. The two ongoing sets of exercises in this text take you through the process of developing an inventory display screen and a purchase order line display screen with data maintenance capabilities. To get the most from this book, work through all segments of the continued exercises, as well as through the additional bookstore order system project that follows Chapters 5 and 7. Chapters 8 and 9 introduce Integrated Language Environment (ILE) tools for RPG. These include bound calls, multiple modules in a program, creating and using service programs, using procedures, and prototyping. Other advanced topics include using such file-oriented elements as record format level identifiers, the OVRDBF (Override with Database File) and OPNQRYF(Open Query File) CL commands, file and record locks, and file security; mining the file-information and program-status data structures for information; handling errors via the *PSSR subroutine, the INFSR keyword, and the Input/Output operation error indicator; and using data queues for program-to-program communication. Don't neglect the appendices! Appendix A explores the programming standards you'll meet in most IS departments and takes you beyond them into issues of programming style. Appendix B introduces debugging tools and techniques to support your programming skills. Finally, Appendix C gives you invaluable training in using Screen Design Aid (SDA). When you interview for a job as an AS/400 programmer, you will be asked about your knowledge of subfiles and other advanced RPG topics. Once you complete this text, its exercises, and the additional bookstore order system project, you'll have a head start on your first programming position or — if you're already a programmer — additional professional development that will count in your department and your company.

Programming in RPG/400, Second Edition, refines and extends the comprehensive instructional material contained in the original textbook. This second edition features a new section that introduces externally described printer files, a new chapter that highlights the fundamentals of RPG IV, and a new appendix that correlates the key concepts from each chapter with their RPG IV counterparts.
This illuminating textbook provides a strong foundation in the essentials of RPG/400 programming and addresses the needs of students and instructors in transition to RPG IV. As a teacher or student, you will welcome the "real-world" approach used throughout -- as will the eventual employers of those who complete a course based on this text. Dr. Yaeger designed the book to give students a thorough understanding of how to use RPG/400 efficiently in a variety of practical applications.
The book begins with an overview of programming for students new to the field. The fundamental concepts of business programming, as well as the development of the RPG language, are presented to ensure your understanding of how RPG evolved to the formats in use today. Everything you need is here to learn how to write a well-designed RPG program, from the most basic to the more complex. Among the topics treated are the principles of top-down design, including the use of subroutines; externally described files; interactive programming; tables, arrays, and advanced data definition, as well as byte- and bit-level operations; inter-program communications; a summary of RPG II with its fixed-logic cycle and use of indicators; and a preview of RPG IV.
Each chapter includes a section of questions, exercises, and programming assignments that reinforce the knowledge you have gained from the chapter and strengthen the groundwork for succeeding chapters. Three appendices cover essentials of AS/400 features needed for program development, SEU, and debugging programs. A fourth appendix contains data file definitions used in the book's programming assignments. The final appendix outlines how the concepts presented in each chapter are handled in RPG IV. An instructor's kit is available on diskette that includes complete data files and solutions for all programming assignments.
This textbook belongs on the required reading list for anyone learning RPG/400 -- and RPG IV -- for use in today's business world.

RPC, or remote procedure calling, is the ability to distribute parts of a program to other computers on a network. An RPC facility manages the exchange of data between computers to make remote execution tranparent to the user. Distributed applications based on RPC can utilize distributed network resources and increase significantly the computing power brought to bear on complex problems. An RPC facility is the fundamental element of a distributed computing environment. The book builds a working understanding of RPC programming through examples. Sun RPC, the de facto standard on UNIX systems, is covered in detail. Interprocess communication and other related UNIX programming topics are also covered. The standard-issue RPC documentation is difficult to understand and lacks real-world examples. There are, in addition, many techniques to learn. This book, written from a programmer's perspective, shows you what you can do with RPC and presents a framework for learning it. Contents include:
- Foundations of remote procedure calling; what it is, how it works, and which vendors support it.
- What RPC offers to application and product developers. How RPC fits into a distributed computing environment.
- ONC and DCE, a comparison of their similarities and differences.
- How to develop, debug, and deploy networked applications.
- Understanding the interprocess control (IPC) mechanisms on which RPC is based.
- Using remote procedure calling in parallel/distributed processing and scheduling.
- Using remote procedure calling with windowing systems.
- Examples of distributed applications using both single and multiple concurrent servers.
