In September 1999 Niall Allsop and his wife Kay flew to Pisa and stepped onto Italian soil for the first time.
Within six months they returned and therafter they visited Italy at least twice a year, usually to the most southerly provinces of Apulia and Calabria and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
They knew they holidayed differently to other people and in Italy, despite the lack of language, they found themselves somehow drawn into people's lives and homes; they had experiences and encounters that seemed to pass others by.
Stumbling through Italy is the irreverent chronicle of their Italian travels and the many remarkable and colorful people they met there up to the summer of 2008 ... when, finally reconciled to the inevitable, they returned to Italy one last time.
Which, as they say, is another story.
Also includes chapters on the idiosyncrasies of the Italian language and the Italian driving experience. -

INTRODUCTION
If I were asked to suggest which books of Lawrence should be read first by someone to whom they were all unknown I think I should suggest Sons and Lovers, and Sea and Sardinia. These two books, I believe, bring you Lawrence at his most accessible, though some might prefer his poems or essays. At the same time they rather neatly illustrate the two kinds of books into which Lawrence's main writing naturally fits, either the long concentrated book over which he laboured for years as he poured out the experience of years, or the book thrown off in a spurt of inspiration and hardly retouched at all.
Sons and Lovers was created from Lawrence's whole early life and was worked over time and again from 1911 to 1913. The whole action of Sea and Sardinia occurred between the 4th and 10th of February, 1921; and the book itself was written in six weeks wholly from memory, without a single note. The book abounds in Lawrence's special quality, namely that he experiences and remembers more vividly than other men and, without any straining, is able to pass on his experiences to others in words so appropriate and felicitous that Lawrence's experiences become the reader's.
Sea and Sardinia, in itself so perfect, came out of a period of wandering and of growing restlessness. The "iniquitous" prosecution of T -

Sardinia, with its quintessential Mediterranean beauty, attracts tourists in search of swimming, boating, windsurfing, hiking, climbing, and camping, with coastal areas tending to be very popular especially in the warmest month, August.
The inner life of the island takes longer to appreciate and requires you to peel away the layers of civilization and the island's natural beauty is under constant ecological threat. Enjoy Sardinia’s beauty while it lasts!

In January 1921 DH Lawrence and his wife, Frieda, left their Taormina home in Sicily and set off on a nine-day excursion to and through Sardinia and back to Sicily via mainland Italy. At the end of the year Sea and Sardinia, Lawrence's fast-paced account of their journey, was published in New York by Thomas Seltzer.Keeping up with the Lawrences is Niall Allsop's contemporary account of making the same journey, as far as possible keeping to the same route, the same timescale, the same mode of transport and the same overnight stops as the Lawrences.Like Sea and Sardinia, Keeping up with the Lawrences is written in the present tense but there the comparisons end for, unlike Niall, Lawrence was not a tolerant traveller, was not the sort to initiate conversations, was not what Italians call simpatico.Lawrence travelled at time of heightened tensions in Europe after the Great War and these are reflected in his outlook and the people he encountered, most of whom he gave nicknames such as Hamlet, the Bounder and the Sludge Queen.Niall traversed the same route in a different world, a brave new world of iPods and tele-communications masts, and here he met Julius Caesar and Cicero, Wonderwoman and Red ... and many more colorful and interesting characters, brought to life on the pages of this unique travelogue.

This second edition of the RCC's guide has been thoroughly updated and revised. Most of the plans of anchorages and harbours have been redrawn and referred to WGS 84 datum. Particular attention has been paid to the structure of the book to make it more user friendly, and to aid this new overview charts have been introduced. In line with the other RCC pilots, waypoints are now given as an aid to navigation and locating the numerous anchorages on the beautiful cruising coasts of Corsica and Bouches de Bonifacio and Sardinia's island-studded north coast.

Sea and Sardinia is a travel book by the English writer D. H. Lawrence. It describes a brief excursion undertaken by Lawrence and Frieda, his wife aka Queen Bee, from Taormina in Sicily to the interior of Sardinia. They visited Cagliari, Mandas, Sorgono, and Nuoro. Despite the brevity of his visit, Lawrence distills an essence of the island and its people that is still recognisable today. Extracts were originally printed in The Dial during October and November 1921 and the book was first published in New York, USA in 1921 by Thomas Seltzer, with illustrations by Jan Juta. A British edition, published by Martin Secker, came out in April 1923.

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, is a walker's paradise. Its scenic diversity ranges from rough and primeval landscapes to gentle, golden sand dunes, from scorching rocky plateaux and windswept plains reminiscent of Africa to rolling hills with lush pastures and dense brushwood, from towering mountains cloaked in fine oak woods to a turquoise sea that touches the rocky coast. The fragrant Mediterranean macchia permeates the scenery, with colourful rock roses and an extravaganza of wild flowers flourishing in spring. Getting out into the countryside, you quickly leave all traces of tourism behind. There is a lovely pastoral feel to the Sardinian countryside. Flocks of sheep graze on verdant grassy slopes, moufflons and wild boar roam the wild and rugged highlands whilst eagles hover silently above. You can taste the real flavour of Sardinia as you follow the walks and car tours in this gem of a guidebook. You will be richly rewarded for your effort.
