In Othello, William Shakespeare explores love, jealousy, betrayal, and racism through a complicated love triangle. It centers on the recently married Othello and Desdemona as well as Iago, who is deeply jealous of Othello and in love with Desdemona. Entirely ruthless in his schemes, Iago plots to destroy their marriage through lies, manipulation, and betrayals, often setting up his own friends as pawns. Iago creates such a pervasive web of lies that no one is safe; the characters, having trusted Iago and been fooled, conclude in suffering and tragedy. Because Othello is described as a Moor, the play is unique in addressing racial themes. Othello continues to be performed for wide audiences specifically to draw upon this theme.

A modern-day Shakespeare in Love
Dearest Juliet,
Rather than kill myself, I have decided to pour my grief into a letter this night. Would only that you had done the same upon finding your lover dead with lips still warm and touched with poison.
As it is, you are not only fictional, but extinguished. I only hope your spirit paid no heed to these cruel tricks of paper fate, so that you might yet provide the comfort I seek.
I spill ink instead of blood because, although my true love lives, her love for me has died. I do not wish to compound my tragedy with desperate measures that would stir only contempt within her breast. As the target of my rejection has rejected me, any harm I do myself, I do only to myself. It is a lesson well learned before the act is done.
LIA CATTANEO never thought she’d be living back home in Verona, Italy, at 28. But here she is, hiding from the world and her philandering husband in her father Salvatore’s apartment for yet another day as she works up the courage to take an intensive cooking class she’s had her eye on. Every year, the professor sends the best letter to Juliet’s Club in Verona, where volunteer scribes reply to letters addressed to Shakespeare’s Juliet. Nick has recently ended a long-term relationship, and he drew on this pain to craft his note.

Giorgio Melchiori is Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the Università Roma Tre in Italy. Widely accepted as Shakespeare's earliest tragedy, "Titus Andronicus" is the bloody story of a Roman general engaged in terrible revenge with the Queen of the Goths, Tamora. The play begins with Titus returning to Rome after ten years of fighting. He brings with him the defeated Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and her sons. Titus sacrifices one of Tamora's sons to avenge the sons he lost in the war, which begins a cycle of revenge in which Tamora and her lover Aaron the Moor plot and scheme against the remaining children of Titus. This entails especially horrific results for his daughter Lavinia, whose fate is thought to be based on a mythological story in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" about Procne and Philomela. The conclusion is full of further violence and death, with few characters remaining to tell the tragic story of Titus and his children.
This richly annotated edition takes a fresh look at the first part of Shakespeare's second tetralogy of history plays, showing how it relates to the other plays in the sequence.
