[This abridged version is translated from the French by Charles E. Wilbour]
This is the great French novel that opened new horizons of literature in the nineteenth century.
Les Miserables is a romantic novel packed with revealing incidents of slum life and poverty in the Parisian underworld of early nineteenth century France. The story follows the adventures of Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who was imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened and bitter criminal upon his release, Valjean is transformed when an act of compassion by a priest he robbed saves him from returning to prison. Changing his ways, he becomes a successful industrialist and town mayor, raising the orphaned daughter of a prostitute as his own. Yet Valjean is still haunted by his past and pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert, who does not believe in moral redemption. Full of suspense, romance, and powerful social commentary, this sweeping epic became the gospel of the poor and oppressed and is widely considered once of the greatest French novels of its age. The core of the book deals with Jean Valjean, a criminal who serves as an example of the misery and contradictions of society with which Victor Hugo was especially concerned.
Les Miserables is both a powerful social document and an -

With an Introduction and Notes by Keith Wren, University of Kent at Canterbury. Set in 1482, Victor Hugo s powerful novel of imagination, caprice and fantasy is a meditation on love, fate, architecture and politics, as well as a compelling recreation of the medieval world at the dawn of the modern age. In a brilliant reworking of the tale of Beauty and the Beast, Hugo creates a host of unforgettable characters amongst them, Quasimodo, the hunchback of the title, hopelessly in love with the gypsy girl Esmeralda, the satanic priest Claude Frollo, Clopin Trouillefou, king of the beggars, and Louis XI, King of France. Over the entire novel, both literally and symbolically, broods the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Vivid characters and memorable set-piece action scenes combine to bring the past to life in this story of love, lust, betrayal, doom and redemption.

It is 1793 in France, the year of the guillotine. Already, Louis XVI has been sentenced to the scaffold, and terror reigns. Ideals topple in the face of political necessity, alliances founder, intrigue is a way of life. The architects of the Revolution--Marat, Danton, and Robespierre--have set up an embryo parliament called the Convention, designed to stem social chaos. As Republican troops engage in bloody battle with counter-revolutionaries, a peasant woman strives simply to protect her three children.
The characters of Ninety-Three define the French Revolution, and history hangs on their actions. As they battle for their own future, the future of a large part of the world can be seen to sway in the balance. Hugo's epic masterpiece captures brilliantly the moment that shaped the destiny not only of France but of all European monarchy.

Characters such as the absurdly criminalised Valjean, the street urchin Gavroche, the rascal Thenardier, the implacable detective Javert, and the pitiful figure of the prostitute Fantine and her daughter Cosette, have entered the pantheon of literary dramatis personae.
