This Jacobean city comedy is a curiosity in that it presents areal-life character, the notorious cross-dresser Moll Frith, whoprobably was among the first audiences of 'her' play before she wastaken up for public misconduct. Middleton and Dekker's 'roaring girl'may outrage her society with her pipe, bluster and swagger, but sheturns out to be the moral centre of the play. Her code of honour leadsher to call the bluff on rogues and conspicuous consumers, to thrash ahypocritical gallant in a duel, and to act as go-between for the younglovers thwarted by parental tyranny. This wry dramatisation of femaledeviancy exposing male ineffectuality is as much to the point today asit was in King James's England. An appendix helps the modern reader toappreciate the canting terms used by the low-life characters.

Timon of Athens is a bitterly intriguing study of a fabulously rich man who wastes his wealth on his friends, and, when he is finally impoverished, learns to despise humanity with a hatred that drives him to his grave. The play's plot structure is schematically clear, and the poetry of Timon's rage is arresting in its savage intensity. Yet readers have often detected loose ends, and the tone of writing is uneven. In his introduction, John Jowett explains how these characteristics arise because the play was written as a collaboration between Shakespeare and Thomas Middleton. This edition pays full justice to Middleton's presence, explaining how his contribution gave the play its distinctive edge. Readers need to read this play as a dialogue between writers of different temperaments, and this edition is the first to make such a reading possible.

Thomas Middleton's notorious play, A Game at Chess, provoked a scandal when it was first performed in 1624. Through a masterly use of the metaphor of chessplay, this satire of men in high places was immediately recognized. The play was performed nine times to large theater audiences before the Privy Council closed the Globe theatre.
