Flouting conventional Victorian attitudes about religion, politics, decorum and morality, Swinburne was a sensualist, alive to pleasure and to pain. He was a poet not of objects and things, or of word paintings, but of energies-of wind and water-and what Tennyson called wonderful rhythmic invention. Atalanta in Calydon is a drama in classical Greek form, with choruses that reveal Swinburne's mastery of melodious verse. His poems are opulent hymns to sensual love in all its aspects, to the loss of love, and to death.
Together, the works in this unique volume demonstrate Swinburne's mastery of form and the rich complexity of his poetry. This edition contains a preface, a commentary on the poems and two appendices, including a map of the places mentioned in Atalanta in Calydon.

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was a Victorian era English poet. His poetry was highly controversial in its day. He is considered a decadent poet. Many of his early and still admired poems evoke the Victorian fascination with the Middle Ages, and some of them are explicitly medieval in style, tone and construction, including The Leper, Laus Veneris, and St Dorothy. His mastery of vocabulary, rhyme and metre arguably put him among the most talented English language poets in history, although he has also been criticized for his florid style and word choices that only fit the rhyme scheme rather than contributing to the meaning of the piece. After the first Poems and Ballads, Swinburne's later poetry was devoted more to philosophy and politics. He did not stop writing love poetry entirely, but the content was less shocking. Amongst his other works are: A Century of Roundels (1883) and The Age of Shakespeare (1908).

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909) is, with Browning and Tennyson, one of the touchstone Victorian poets. He was a major critic and an important fiction writer as well. Emerging out of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, his bold and innovative work made him both a celebrated and controversial writer at home and a figure of international importance. Hugo, Baudelaire, and Mallarmé were among his great admirers.

1882. This is Swinburne's version of the courtly legend and is considered by him to be his masterwork. He is one of the very few poets since the days of Raleigh and Sidney to come from the aristocracy. He is also well-known for his sexual proclivities and debauched lifestyle. In writing Tristram of Lyonesse, Swinburne found the perfect opportunity for a complete formulation of the unique synthesis of passion, pantheism, and the courtly love ethos upon which his most important philosophical intuitions were primarily founded.

1875. The poet Swinburne was one of the very few, since the days of Raleigh and Sidney, to come from the aristocracy. He was also well-known for his sexual proclivities and debauched lifestyle. Atalanta (balanced) is a character from ancient Greek mythology. She was from Arcadia, a daughter of Iasus or Schoeneus and Clymene. The episode in her life relating to the Calydonian boar hunt is reprised by Swinburne in this verse tragedy. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
